Panama Facts

A long history of American influence ensures Panama is a destination that is safely foreign: Tap water is potable, English is one of two official languages (along with Spanish), the U.S. dollar is the state currency in fact, if not in name (the Balboa, Panama's official tender, is not widely circulated), and you can plug in your hairdryer without frying it.

Panama is home to several rich indigenous cultures and shares the same biodiverse rainforest that has made Costa Rica an ecotourism mecca. Panama City is a bustling metropolis with the best shopping, dining and nightlife in Central America, as well as a resurgent historical quarter—Casco Viejo—that is being extensively restored.

Best of all, because Panama is a compact country with well-maintained roads, travelers can enjoy all its facets without enduring lengthy transfer times. It is possible to touch two continents and swim in two oceans in one day. Also key for planners facing insurance concerns, Panama is outside of both hurricane and earthquake zones.

No trip to Panama is complete without visiting the engineering wonder that is the Panama Canal. At the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center, guests can watch the machinery at work and visit a museum devoted to the canal's checkered history. To view passing ships in style, take the scenic railway alongside the canal; the remodeled cars feature mahogany paneling and leather booth seating. But the best way to experience the canal is to be part of the action—by making a full or partial transfer

Panama can be very humid and has a long rainy season. Bring cold water and umbrellas to all activities.

Tides on the Pacific coast go out dramatically, and the effect at low tide can be less than picture perfect
