Scuba Diving In Belize

With the second largest Barrier Reef, (the first being Australia’s) three of the most spectacular atolls that make as much reef surface area as the Belize Barrier Reef (185 miles long) and a young tourism industry just being discovered there are no more questions left as to why Belize has become one of the diving capitals of the world. Belize’s environmental strategy along with its small population has also functioned superbly in managing to protect over 185 miles of our Barrier Reef and our three atolls that comprise about 400 square miles of reef surface.

Placencia is known for its spectacular coral walls where the continental shelf drops off and for having the closest route to the world famous Gladden Spit. Again, our strategic location puts us west of gladden Spit which is 26 miles offshore: it is the place where during 4 months out of every year the giant Whale Sharks congregate to give us close views of the largest fish in the planet. The number of Cayes off the peninsula and three different marine reserves which are no-take zones make Placencia a diver’s paradise.

Whale Shark Diving and Snorkeling Trips in 2008

26 miles from Placencia is the Gladden Spit where the largest fish in the sea, the whale sharks, come every year during the full moon in March, April, May and June. It is common at this time of the year to see schools of Motton and Cubera Snapper, by the thousands, with whale sharks passing through them. Divers and snorkelers will likely see these majestic creatures very close up but are not allowed to chase, ride, touch nor otherwise disturb the whale sharks.

Diving and snorkelling with the Whale Sharks will happen during the full moons of March, April, May and June; this is the time in the year when Southern Belize offers divers and snorkelers the unique opportunity for spotting  this large pelagic feeders.
